Welcome to American Studies
American Studies explores central themes and issues in American life using materials and approaches from literature, art, pop culture, history, and ideas about culture and social institutions that come from sociology, political science, geography, and other fields. You'll also learn strategies for working with materials and methods of different kinds. American diversity, work, politics, and popular culture are central topics in most of our courses. |
"In American Studies, I found a place where I was challenged not only to ask difficult questions, but to search for the answers in new and unusual places. The topics that I studied as an American Studies major were wonderful, but it is the process itself that has helped me the most in the professional world."
-- Erin Holmes Wingfield, 1998 graduate, Development Office, Ohio Historical Society |

"American Studies allowed me to design a curriculum that focused on my interests while steadily moving toward a degree. It's flexible. And when I finished, there were graduate school opportunities available in History and Geography. If I were starting over I would choose this major again."
-- Ray DeCarlo, 2001 graduate, Graduate Assistant in Geography, University of Akron |
