AIMS:
In this General Education course of artistic and literary perspectives, we will
study stories, poems, and a play and discuss them in class to try to understand life and ourselves a little better, and we will be asking the question, what is a “good” life.We will also learn how to analyze literature in order to find out how it works, that is, has an effect on—moves, persuades, or teaches—us as readers or viewers, and how to express our views and thoughts about the works.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
1)Class work will comprise 25% of your grade. You must complete each reading assignment prior to the class period in which it will be discussed, and each class will begin with a writing assignment on the material. For this assignment, you will receive 3 points for attending class and writing your name on your paper, up to 3 more points for demonstrating you have read the assignment, and from 1 to 4 more points for how well you answer the question. Thus, it is possible to get 10 points per day, and your daily grade will be determined by your accumulated points: A = 90% points, B = 80%, etc.Missed in-class writing assignments can’t be made up.If you leave class after completing the writing assignment, you will not be given credit for it, since the writing is in preparation for class discussion and activities. All writing assignments must be turned in when I call for them.I won’t accept those that are turned in later, even if, or especially if, you were late for class.
2)There will be two exams in which you will be asked to identify, or explain the significance of, passages, characters, concepts, or situations from the readings and the class discussions. Exams may not be made up except with my prior permission, and I’ll deduct one letter grade for each class period that exam is late.
