GIS Certificate (GISci)
The certificate in Geographic Information Science provides a program for career- oriented students and professionals in geographic information systems (GIS) and related geo-spatial technologies (remote sensing, global positioning systems, cartography, and spatial data handling and analysis). Rendered upon completion of the requirements, the certificate represents academic proficiency in GIScience and is administered by the department of Geography. Students must take courses in the areas listed below and complete them with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 (B) or higher and no grade below a C. The certificate is available to undergraduates and non-degree seeking professionals who meet the requirements. Note that some classes may require other prerequisites for entrance.

 

I. Core Courses

  • GEOG 2610: Map Use and Interpretation (3 credits)
  • GEOG 5805: Remote Sensing 1 (3 credits)
  • GEOG 5810: Geographic Information Science 1 (3 credits)
  • GEOG 5811: Geographic Information Science 2 (3 credits)


II. Developmental Courses: Select 2 courses (6 credits) from the following options:

 

  • GEOG 4813: Field Methods (3 credits)
  • GEOG 4825: Geography Internship (3 credits) *
  • GEOG 4840: Seminar in Geography (3 credits) *
  • GEOG 5806: Remote Sensing 2 (3 credits)
  • GEOG 5812: Global Positioning Systems and GIS (3 credits)
  • GEOG 5820: Special Problems in Geography (3 credits) *
  • CSIS 3726: Visual / Object Oriented Programming (3 credits) **
  • CSIS 3722: Development of Databases (3 credits) **
  • CEEGR 2610: Surveying (3 credits + 1 credit 2610L lab)


* These courses are allowed for credit in the GISci certificate only with a significant Geographic Information Science related component, as well as permission of the Chair.

 

** These courses require CSIS 1590 and CSIS 2610 as prerequisites.
