Philosophy 2609, Technology & Human Values
Many students have a difficult time conceiving of any technological advancement as problematic. Our assessment of this course is still in early stages, and we will gain a better understanding of what is and is not effective in teaching the course as we develop more data for comparison. Initial data gives some indication that the most effective means of helping students to recognize potential problems and perils in technological advancement is through having them discover the problems in their own research and analysis, particularly when they must probe into an issue deeply enough to make a successful presentation on the technological development and its associated problems. In subsequent courses and their assessment, we will experiment with expanded use of student presentations as a way of making students more cognizant of both the technological advances and the potential problems that accompany those advances.
Incidentally, students in this class tend to be very good indeed at use of computers and the effective use of the latest technology for their presentations. While the assessment of Professional Ethics indicates that many students use such technology enthusiastically but not very effectively, that is generally not the case for the technology and human values students.
